Tonight I want to talk about essential oils and their benefits to our mind body and souls; a great addition for a healthy lifestyle.
Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that are extracted and or distilled from various parts of plants and trees, such as flowers, fruits, leaves, stem, roots or bark. They carry great mental and physical health benefits; from massages to scalp restoration and overall relaxation. Essential oil has been used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes since the ancient past.
I’m sure you have heard of different oils changing the life of your hair and scalp, so let’s get a little deeper into the key factors that cause these amazing affects. These aromatic oils deeply penetrate into the hair follicles and shaft and help provide healthy, shiny hair. Different oils have different affects; some can be very helpful to soothe irritated, dry, promote healthy hair growth, strengthen the hair shaft, and improve the overall condition of your hair. Other oils even influence the sebaceous glands (a small gland in the skin which secretes a lubricating oily matter (sebum) into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair) and can regulate their function!
I found a great article, that I will cite below, about 5 essential oils. So lets get to it!
- Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil is a very well rounded oil which makes it valuable for all hair types. Some of its benefits are as follows:
- Helps balance natural scalp oils
- Antiseptic, analgesic, and antiseptic properties; great treatment for dry, flaky scalp
- Soothes and nourishes scalp which helps relieve inflammatory scalp conditions
- Reduce hair loss
- Makes hair soft and shiny

Lavender oil has a mild sedative and antidepressant action which makes it useful to ease nervous tension and stress related conditions. It is a great remedy for different types of pains including sore muscles, sprains and back aches.

Khus oil is derived from the roots of khus grass and is known as an oil of tranquility because of its ability to cool, calm, and soothe the mind and body (mental and physical health)
- Help prevent hair loss due to high body heat
- Useful remedy for acne and oily skin
- Ideal addition in massage oil and bath; deeply relaxing
- Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary oil is packed with antioxidants that help prevent greying or hair thinning; this makes this oil a master in hair growth enhancement. This magnificent oil stimulates blood flow to the scalp which promotes healthy strong hair growth!!
- Dandruff treatement
- Scalp irritation
- Oily skin
- Memory improvement
- Increase alertness
- Chamomile (Roman/German) Essential Oil
Chamomile is a flower in the daisy family that is known for more than just sleepy time tea 😉
here are some additional benefits:

Chamomile will actually add beautiful golden highlights to blonde hair and a beautiful sheen to dark hair. It even conditions the hair and vastly improves luster and softness.
- Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Ylang Ylang oil is extracted from the Cananga Odorata tree which is commonly found in the rain forests of certain Asian and South Pacific Islands like Indonesia , Philippines, Java, Sumatra, Comoros and Polynesia. I had never even heard of this oil but the benefits are truly unlimited!
Here are a few benefits:
- Hair growth
- Normalize sebum (oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands that keeps the skin and hair moisturized)production
- Healthy scalp maintenance
- Stimulates blood flow to scalp which encourages growth and nourishes hair follicles
- Relaxes facial muscles

- Helps treating anger
- Lowers blood pressure
- Strengthens nervous system
How To Use Essential Oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated and potent, so they should not be applied directly to your hair or scalp. They should first be mixed with a base oil, or can be diluted in herbal rinse, or floral water. The essential oil content in a blend should usually be mixed at a 1-3 ratio.
Base Oil for fine, thin hair use sunflower, evening primrose, coconut, grape seed, ghee, flaxseed, olive, or jojoba oil – these will add volume to your fine hair.
Base Oil for thick coarse hair use rich nourishing oils such as: avocado, olive, hemp, rosehip, sesame, almond or evening primrose – these are valuable hydrating treatments.
Massage blend for hair and body:
- 3 to 5 drops in 1 teaspoon (5ml) of base oil
- 7 to 25 drops in 25 ml of base oil
- 20 to 60 drops in 100ml of base oil
Start with the minimum suggested amount, and increase if need be.
Massage the lovely homemade blend into your scalp and hair, leave it on for an hour or overnight for more conditioning. Wash with a natural shampoo and let your hair dry naturally.
This is information I am so happy that I found and like I said this is only the beginning of my research on essential oils! There are so many things that grown naturally that can help us live a healthy, and peaceful life full of mind opening possibilities!
